Tip #9

The bigger the article directory, the more you need to submit articles to the smaller and more tightly focused subcategories. The broader category topics often have so many articles it is harder to be noticed by readers and publishers. Also, if articles are displayed in categories by "most recent" submissions, your article may stay front and center longer.

General article directories accept articles in a broad range of categories. Some article directories leave out one or two topic areas, yet are primarily "general" enough to be included here.

Authors should submit their articles to the appropriate category of general article directories and to niche article directories that target the specific topic.

General article directories differ in the degree to which topics are targeted, such as the number of layers of category drill down there is. Most article directories offer one or two level categorization of article topics. A few do not categorize at all. Rare ones simply list articles as they come in.

The larger the number of articles an article directory has, the more important categorization becomes. Good categorization helps visitors and publishers find the articles they want quickly.

In many cases, topic categories are the basis for RSS feeds of articles. Well-maintained article directories will often ban authors who do not take care to submit their articles to the correct categories. Authors that do not take the time to choose categories carefully waste the article directory webmaster's time and reduce the value of the article directory for all users.
